President-Elect McKinley is filling up' is Cabinet rapklly. Lyman J. Gage was named for Secretary of the Treasury n Thursday, and yesterday General ussell A. Alger of Michigan was named or Secretary of War and accepted. 'here are now three Western states epresented in the Cabinet - Ohio, Illiois, and Michigan- and all by conessedly able and popular men. The appointment of General Alger to ie war protfolio is as notable and as ommendable in its way as either of the ther appointments. General Alger has een for twenty years the choice of the ld soldiers of the Union army for Secetary of War. He has been since the rar one of the foremost business men f Michigan and has been all the time acive in politics and a stalwart Repubican. His state has presented him sevral times as a candidate for President )efore Republican conventions and he ïas won distinction in that sort of leadrship that inspires enthusiasm and ompels harmony. General Alger has ever sulked in his tent, has never falered in a fight, has never lost courage n defeat. He has been as popular outide his party as in it ; has been as prominent as a man of affairs as he has in olitics, and has been intimately assoiated with all the great party leaders. The fitness of the appointment will not be questioned anywhere. General Alger stands before the country as the deal Secretary of War. His attractive )ersonality, his fine traits of character, lis knowledge of military affairs, his oldierly cast of mind, and his genial and equable temper will make him a )opular and valuable member of the 'resident's official family. Possibly 'resident-Elect McKinley is choosing the members of the Cabinet with an eye to heir pulling together in sympathy with ïimself and the enunciated policy of he Republican party, as well as with an eye to their general capableness and heir peculiar fitness for the duties assigned to them. So far the Presidentelect has in pleasing himself greatly pleased the country.-
