The city of Santa Fe., N. M., was founded by the SpanJards in 1598 under the mame of Sant-a Fe, on the site of Tigeui-a or Tigua, ome of the celebrated "Seven Oiitiies" at the foundimg of the Aztec Confederacy, in 1426. lts streets, museums, and private oollections of curios absolutely teem wifih relies wnd reoords oí a Btlrrlng hitetory, and include famious pietures of saiioi't and shrine, painted on elk and puma Bkius, sabré tbrasta wliere tthiey had been used as baaners during flbe niarch of Coronado in 1541, othears ■n-litih arrow holes from attacks by Indilans on tibe line of niarch up the Malley of the Rio Grande. Th palace has become tlie home oí the cïuoicest collection of Mexicam and Spamish pictures in the southwest, and in lts historiaal rooms ara priceless treasures of reeord and relie. Around it, too, lingera mucli of the romance of the city. For 300 y e ars it hias been the home oí its miers, 76 Mexican and Spanish and 17 Anerician governors ha ving held sway wrthin its walls. In Santa Fe are the military heaüqual-ters for New Mexico, it being also the olidest ni'llijtary establishment in America, created by the Spaniards Ia 1602, and in almost contimious occupiation ever eince. Here-, too, is the oldest house in the United States, in which Ooronado is eaid to hare iodged in 1540, and, perhaps, even more iöterestkig, here is the oidest churcb, San Miguel, built afoout 1543, piartially destroyed Ia 1680, wiiolly restored In 1710, the restorers leavllng intact all thiat was possible oí Mie oM roof hewn by Indians under the guldaince of the fathers. In tihis church is the great bell, almiost solid, cast in 1356, and haviing ain inscription in Spanisih round it as a bamd, the letters and figures being still well ralsed in the eoaü casting. This bell was brought over from Spaiin and hung in the töwer, but ïlinally being thought too heavy lor th tower, it was removed to a fcubstantial tinxber supp'OTt in the entrance to the church. In the cathedral and other churches are remarkalile reredöses, paimtings and vestmients, many of them oí considerable antiiq-uity, all iaviting the visitor to ltager in thls home of the past But the city is als a city of the present, and a very pteasant present rt is.
