Under the head of "Self-Supporting," ie Ypsilanti Sentinel relieves itself of ie following: "It is amusing to read the argumenta reseuted by sume advocates, who imline every word tliat is not in praise f an object dear to theni is uttered for ie purpose of injuiïng it. Thus the nu Arbor Courier flies at once, every me the University oL Michigan is menoned, and íoi dly prótesis against al iticism, denouncing everybody whi oes not believe, as il does, tliat institu on to be perfect. [This sort of rot ised by the Sentinel in place of argu ïent.] "A correspondent of the Michigan 'inner recently quoted an ex-membei f the legislatura as saying "the farmerre taxed high to edúcate lawyers whi ome back and beat the farmers.' Vhereupon up jatnps the Courier am ccupies a column of space to say tha ie law department is self-supportnn lecause the receipts are greater thai ie aggregate amouut of salaries paid flus statement of the Sentinel is i alsehood] and tliat nobody pays a tax o support it. "The cost of running the law departlent is by no nieans confined to tin exorbitant) salaries paid the lecturerf nd teachers. The interest upon tin ïoney invested, the heating and re :iirs, expense of maintaming and enarging the library, and other items no ïcluded in the Courier's comparison. Here is where the Sentinel man showt lis ignorance or wilfull misrepresenation, one or the other - perhaps both.] rea part of the cost of training lawyers, nd the $30,000.00 received annnall) rom matriculante is not surficient to over it. "Friends of the University can not fford to acquiesce in such nonsensical aims as that made by the Courier, or can the institution itself be aided )y that paper's attacks upon those who re taxed to support it." How does it happen that the Sentinel s so wise? Now that it has made the assertion ïat the figures given by the Courier are alse, will it kindly produce those that re correct? The books are all open to ie inspection of the public, and we feel ure that the officials would gladly give ny one who comes honestly after nformation all the assistance possible. A person who is so fast to denounce thers as the Sentinel is, ought to be ble to make good its words or keep its ongue between its teeth. As for the dirty insinuations of the Sentinel, they remind one of the anwer given by a man who stuttered , to ;he question: "Why don't you talk traight?" "Be-because th-the L-Ljord didn't m-m-inake me that w-waway !"
