Wlien the legislutive cominittee and friends were at Ypsilanti last week, they were eutertained at the Hawkins liouse during their stay, and on Thursday eveiiing given a quail supper. Alter the feed they were tuiked to, aud Capt. Allen did most oí the talking. He said in part : "The Michigan State Normal ;ilant representa an iivestmeut of ■■f-ÖO.uOO and is (me of the greatent institutions in the slak' oí Michigan. The work done liere is feit in every nook and corner in the slat' . The school luis had at ita liead able men from VT Ie li to Boone, nntil todnv the Miohigan State Normal School stands at the head of schools of its kind in the country. We ! are interested in the country. We are i interested in the school heyond a seltish motive. We have put our nioney into , the instituí ion. We feel we have done lietter by it than most towna wonld do. We put our children into the training school. J have always feit that the training school is like the dissectiug toom at the medical departinent of the University. It is necessary, but it is awful on the subjects, hut we saeririce our children cheerfully to this work. Tomorrow you will see 4).i acres for which the city paid $8, 500 and donated to the state. On that land stands the training school. There is also there a building erected without cost to the state - the S. C. A. building, which was donated by a citizen of Ypsilanti, and that building is worth $10,000. This makes $18,500 paid by the oitizens as against $25,000 appropriated by the state. The city ulso gave $3,000 for the pnrchase of the gymnasinm grounOH. In sdd tion Ypsilanti has agreed and will, a .soou as the Normal authorities gt reu ly, put in a water pipe to the enter of the building for lire proteetion. The city has provided the best sewerage and bas bnilt a largo water tower from which streama can be throwu over tlie highps( point of the Normal buildings. Tliis tower is opposite the Normal grounda and could have been erected elsewhere at a less cowt. But it was built there for flre protection to the Normal. Thus the money you liave in in the past put in here has not been wasted Rnd we l'eel that tlie present legislature will not let tlie Normal interests subside for lack of funds. We want the two winr additions to the training pchool completed and when you consider that the citizens have given half of the entire cost, you will see we have done all we can at present, [f you build on the foundations already started you will do exactly what you should do."
