John Griffith, who is announced to appear at the Grand Opera House on Monday March 8, in a big production of "Faust," thougli hut a young man, is a remarkably oapable actor, as may De judged by his work in the character of Mephisto. There is a olear intelligence and a thoughtful direction in his characterizatiOD that. iudieates artistie perception and reriective study, aud lie possesses a degree of mental power to govern an exceptional amount of physical forces. He gives a consistent representation of Mephisto, keeping his performance on a judieiously deteriniued plañe oí sobriety, avoiding the undignifled tendency to burlesque and buffooncry that lias been a grose fault in the work of one or two actors of eminence. Mr. Griffith has a ñne face, indicative of iuteüectual decisión and clearness oí apprehensiou, and in repose itis rather irregular; though strong of feature and not unhandsome. He has great mobility, not only of face, but of body, and has quite the figure for Mephisto, straight, lithe, slender, but well knit and suggesting a strength beneath its grace. His voice is firm, strong, resourceful and is used with judgment. The company supportiug the youngstar is said to be au excellent one, and an abundance of new and gorgeous scenery, sorne novel electric efFects, and handsome costumes are promised.
