A bilí introducedatLansing allowii g students wlio liave no otlií-r home, lo i vote iit Aun Arbor, lias bren ereatly exciting tlie nervious people wlio did not take time to look ;!o it. Democratie editora saw at once that as most of the students are republicana their part}' was Hable to sulfer by it, so the Washtenaw Times aud Argus men juinp iip vvith a big hoo, giving ín awful si'are head and throwing their confiding readera into íits. They juinped on to Representative Sawyer with ill kinds of abuse, showing a woeful lack oí kuowledge of a representative's duties, wlñch are to represent bis constituents. Some of Mr. Sawyei's constituents sent hiui the bilí with the request that it be introduced. This he did without exuressing anv opinión as to whether it ought to pasa or not, just as he has a great many other bilis sent to him, and just as every representative or senator in state legislature or congrega always do? Henee there can be no criticism on Mr. Stnvj'er for earrying out his duty oí introdnction of bilis. Now a vvord as to the bilí. lt is in line with the laws of many of our best states. In Ohio we know the law lias been in exislence for many years and works well. None oí the otlier states uheie it is in operatiou have ever fouiid rensons to repeal it. It is just that very voter should have a right to vote omewliere. ïhere are a few studente iere every year vvlio have nu otlur ïoine, perhaps working their vny ihrougb college. Some of theui vote iere now, and some are throwu out. Ilio object of ttie bill ia to give them m opportunity for voting somewh re. The Argus gets up a great scare about ts adding 1,500 votes lo the city. ïhis s absurd, because: First, One-quarter of all the students are women. Second, Of the remaiaing 1,000, over tbree-quarers are ander 21, the usual time of entrance bein 17 or 18 yeara of age. Chis loíuves practically only a part of the seniors, the smailest class in college. Chird, of this remaining 500 over oneïalf live in Michigan, supported by arents living outside of Aua Arbor, while most of the remainder are simiarly situated at homes in Ohio, Indiana or Illinois. Summiug this up it looks as though tliere would not be 200 students who could avail theraselves of tliis, but they should be allowed to vote somewbere.
