We walk within the shadow and we feel its tblokeclag iold That raps us round and holds us close, a cloafc against the cold; The day ia growing sombre, aad the joyous ligbt Iihs fled, And beneatb our feet the road is rough and clouds are overhead. We sit wiihin the shadow, and ín that silence dumb, To us in softened echoes remembered volees come: Dear eyea that close in slumber once, dear hands that straigh tened lie. Awaken tender yearnings as (he day wanes slowly by. We rest wiihin the shadow, through the barrylng people go On erran da wift for gold and eain, beyoud us, to and fro; We nave no care far transió nt things; we wish no more to strive As once we did; we res.t, we dream, we feel but half ulive. Our resting and our watting, aud our plodding ou our way With the suushine of the past casting darkneison today, With no caring for the future, while the heart-ache holds us fast, With no thought for any pleasure- ah, 'tis well these cannot last. For the shadow always lifts, and the sunlight glowsagaiu; There are sudden gleams of brightness, sweet clear sunshiiig alter rain; we gírd ourselves for action, strengthened we arise and go From the sanctuary outward where the feet tramp to and fro. Liife must have its sometí mes sorrow, but the yeara that dría aloug Touch the minor cqrds but seldom; there are Bpacea büthe wiih song Sometiines we must face the shadow, where the wind blows keen and cold, But the shadow fades at dawning and the east is flecked with gold
