Pliny says that the saw was first iovented by Dasdalus, but, according to Apollodorns, it was the inventian oL Talus, who used the jawbone of a crocodile to cut throngh a piece of wood and then made au iron instrument in irnitation of it. The, saw is represented on the rnonuinents of Egypt froni 2500' to 3000 B. C. As early as A. D. Í333 sawmills driven by water power wexe ia pperation at Augsburg, and, it is believed, before this they were in operation in Paris, driven by the cnrrent of the Seinc. The first sawmill erected in the Nonvay pineries was in 1530. Sawruills were nmnerous iu Italy in the sixteenth century.
