Ashland, Wis., July 31.- A company ol Ashland men have been prospecting ir a mountainous región twenty miles south and say they have discovered gold in paying quantities. They have beer working quietly the last few months and have purchased 2,000 acres of lanc in that región. They are confident that their flnd will be a profltable one. Assays show that the gold runs on ar average cf $60 a ton. For years it has been known that gold could be found ir the hills near Mellen, which is a continuation of Gogebic range. Ten years agc proFpectcrs found gold that aspayed $9( a ton, but at the time the iron mining fever came on and further explorations were smspended. The men interested have a forcé of men at work continuing the prospecting Among those interested in the propertj are Edvvard Bekken, J. S. Ellis, banker; Sam Knowles, logger, and R. A. Winkler of Mihvaukee, the latter who owns considerable property in Ashland.
