Mark Twain writing of the Queen's Jubilee, saya tliat the most, remarkable thing that lias happened daring Victoria's long reign is the increase in the number of English-speaking people. When tlie present Queen of England was borD, seventy-eight years ago, there vvere only 25,000,000 English-speakipg people in the world ; now there are more than 128,000,000. No sueli rapid spread of language was ever knnwii before. The grèat English-speaking nations and their populations are as follows : Country. Pupulallon. United States. 75,000,000 United Kingdom, 40,000,000 Canada, 5,000,000 Australia and New Zelaml , 5,000,000 In Asia, África and elsewhere, 5,000,000 Total, 1-S,ü00,000 The greatest increase in the number of Enülishiníí-SDeakiiisr people has not been in tho Queen's doinain, b'ut in the country whicli cut loose from English rule. The population of the United States in 1820, when Queen Victoria was 2 years old, was only 9,033,825. It has increased more tlian seven and oue-lialf times since tlien. In 1821 the population of the United Kingdom was 21,272,187. It lias scarcely doubled in the seventy-six years that liave since intervened. Eugland, it is true, has made remarkable progresa during Yictoria's reign, bnt the progress of this republic in population and all other respects has been far more wonderful.
