"I notice," said a gentleman to a Courier reporter a few days siuce, "the authorities here are ínaking a rnistake in renumbering tlie city tliat might be easily obviated. I refer to the method pursued here oí dividing a loug block and giving it 400, 500 and G00, as in the block on Hurón st. {rom División to State st. "In Philadelphia, where the block system originated, when an instance of the kind referred to occurs, they give the long block the hundred tliat belongs to it, and tlien in starting on the next block drop out the 100's necessary to even up with. By that plau the blocks between División and State sts. would be given 400, beeause they are the fourth blocks from the starting point, but in numbering the bloeks east of State st., 500 and 600 would be skipped and 700 used, to conform to tlie numbers between Liberty and Jefferson." The idea is a good one, aad such a plan would be fax more satisfactory than the one ftdopted here. As neither Liberty, William or Jefferson sts. extend farther than State street, the Courier fails to see why even that should be necessary in this case. The fact that these bloeks, on so many streets, have been given so many hundreds will have a tendeucy to confuse, while the idea in renumbering was to help people in going about the city and finding places rather than to inystify and perplex them.
