A regular seseion of the council Monay evening was commenced by readiug ,wo Communications from Mayor Hisock. The first one of these documenta alled the attention of the council to a ortion of an ordinance on gidewalks, in liich tile city bears t lie expense of rading for sidewalks. This had cost ie city over $2,000 since June, 189(5, nd the mayor recommended its repeal, 'he communication was prornptly reerred to the ordinance cominittee withut reconimendation. The second comlunication is one that the council uill o well to heed. After calling attention o tlie fact that after crediting the apiropriation of $15,000 levied this sumíer, the street finid still has an overraft, and the mayor said : "I respectully urge you not to ordor any new treet work at present or appropriate ny further sum of money for that pur)ose." ïhe council simply received bis document and placed it on file. Aid. Brown intimated that the counil had been spending money on one or ,wo streets all summer to please the mayor, and -now he thought they had a ight to spend some money to please hemselves. The hand of warning was urned palm earthwárd and "set down n," hard. Then the body proceeded to do business. The contract for building a tooi ïouse for the city cemetery on the ■ïorthside was awarded to Ed. W. Hatch or $82, an extra $50 being appropriated herefore. The request for a brick crosswalk across Wilmot street on northeast side of Washtenaw Avenue, was referred to idewalk committee. City Engineer Key presented estinates as folllovvs : For the William St. mprovement, $320; Ann St., $3-10; Miler Ave., $475. Also of $896.48 for competed work on sewer No. 6, was ordered laid ; he also recommended that eatch üisins be constructed for storm water nstead of allowiug it to run into the sewers. Iuvitations to go to Columbus, Ohio, and Nashville, ïenn., were read and iled, but no appropriation made. The reeomnaendation to give the rreen property $100 and lay their house aterals was approved. An ordinance relative to exposing poisons on the streets for birds and animáis was reported and adopted. Tlie street committee reported in favor of turnpiking J5. University Ave. irom Ilill to Packard Lt., to pave glitter 011 botli sides of 13th St. between Catherine and Fuller Sts. ; appropriating $75 to grade Wilmot St., and straighten gutter on south side of Belser St., all of which were adopted. Certain walks were also ordered laid by the city. The suin of $1,000 was appropriated for the needed addition to city fire engine building, to be expended by the Board of Fire Goinmissioners. Sewer bonds to the amount of $12,585.25 were ordered sold. The council agreed to set as a board of review on sewer district No. 7 on October 4, commencing at 9 o'clock a. m. Ex-City Attorney John W. Bennett was allowed $100 for defending Ex-City Marshal Banfield in the supreme court in 1896.
