At the dedication of the new hall and building of the Ilarugari Society last Wednesday and Thursday, Jlayor Hiscrwik delivered the address of welcome iu a neat little speech whicli we publisli in full, as follows : fr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen: Permit me, in response to your kind nvitation to appear before you tb is evening, to express iny appreciation of he honor conferred apon me, and to hank yon for the ])leasure it affords me ;o particípate in the exercises of this occasion. In behalf of onr city, wlioni '. represent tonight, allow me to extend a welcome to the people of other cities who are here to assist the local lodge in the dedication of tlieir home. The objects of the order of Harugari are social and fraternal. They seek to cultívate the Germán language, Germán moráis, and to help one anotber in case of sickness, and in the event of the leath of a member tliey are pledged to ielp his widow and orphans - surely this last is a noble and unselfish aim. A well known writer has said : "We should profit by the lessons taught by experience, avoiding the errors and initating the virtues that pass before us. Examples we have in abuudance - examples to shun, examples to imítate ; along the sliore we see beacon lights alazing to warn us of impemling peril. One truth is constantly impressed upon us. It is this - selfishness. It is the characteristic of small minds, unfeeling iiearts, and is the constituent element of vice. More crime is oommitted, more evil results from love of self than from any other. cause. You may store a mind with all the learning of the ages. God himself may Ilumine it with the geuius of intellect, and if self be its constant study it is infinitely small. The heart that feels no emotion, that never throbs with sympathy, is insensible to the love of its Creator. Kuch man's effort should be to live an honorable and useful life - useful in every possible way to the world in wliich he lives. ïo make a n-orld of beauty Eich loviner heart should plan, Each man perforiu liis duty And help lus brother man. The local lodge No. 470, with 175 members, and the Womañ's Friendship Lodge No. 70, with 80 nieuibes, have erected this fine building and will tonight dedícate it to their uses. I sire to congratúlate tbc niembors on the great work they have accomplished and thosplendid baildiug they haveerecteil. Of the many societies in the city, I believe the Harngari is the oni-y one owning tiie building it occupies. And now, my friends and fellow citizens, I know you will alljoin me in tbe wiah tliat the Harugari society may continue to enjoy all prosperity, and tbat fcheir fullest anticipations in tbeir new home be realized.
