Spencer, the man who wrote the opera "Littlo Tycoon," isa queer genius. He is a mild sort of religious crank and used to sin( in the choir in a country town in New Jer sey. He offered his opera to everybody In America who had evr produced comic opera, but they all refused to touch it unti he struck George Bartholemew, of the Temple theatre, Philadelphia, who agreec to put it on the stage. It is said that Spencer alniost. fninted when Bartholemew told hm he would do it, and went around among his friends f or days af terward telling of his gooc luck and always shedding tears during the recital.
