A stock company is being formed, by Ann Arbor and Pittsburg cap;talist8, :o bore for natural gas in this city. Capt. E. P. Allen has been engaged by Welch Post, No. 137, G. A. R., to deliver the addres in this city, on Decoration Pay. Joe Williams says he would be very happy to present the party who broke Dto Brown's store the other night, with his remaining glove. G. E. Waterman, of Pittsfleld, has purchased the old Lewis & Gibson photographic stand, in Ypsilanti and opened for business last Monday. Wm. Weinman was arrested last Friday, charged with striking his father. He will haye a trial bufore a jury in Justice FrueaufFs court tonurrow. Mr. and Mrs. A. Isbell, of west Huronst, had a pleaant surprise visit from about forty of their friends and neighbore, last week Wednesday evening. Chas. R rabacher, publisher uf the South Lyon Excelsior, has associated with him W. H. Brown, a gentleman of considerable newspaper ability. Mayor Robison was fined twelve boxes of cigars, by the council, Tuesday evening, for being late. The Mayor promptly referred it to the cemetery committee. On our second page to-day will be found a gtriking and instructive illustration of the comparative worth of the various kinds of baking powders in the market. Wm. L. Dieterle, late of Manchester, has purchased the undertaking business formerly conducted by John Keek & Co. See his announcement in another column. A fire in the rear of John Schneider's blacksmith shop, last Thursday evening, called out the fire department. The ñames were extinguished before any damage was done. By an order from the post office department, postal notes are mude payable at any money order office in the U. S,, and not simply at the office designated as heretofore. We neglected to cali attention last week to the new advertisement of J. T. Jacobs & Co. The price on all winter goods in their store has been reduced. Overcoats one-third off. The total receipts of the Ann Arbor pot office, for the year ending Dec. 31, 1886, were $20,509.65 ; the total expenses were $7,224 05 ; net earnings for the govj erment $13,325.60. There is a feeling among our business men against Ann Arbor having a free mail deüvery. A pedtion has been circulated, which has received a good many signatures, protesting ag&inst it. Johu Mulaney was arrested last Fnday for stealing cluthing f rom the residence of Patrick Martin. He plead guilty before Justice Frueauff, who bound him over to the circuit court for sentence. J. A. Brown's grocery store, on Statest, was entered by burglars Tuesday night and carried off "bout $15 worth of eoods. Mr. Brown has offered a reward of $25 for the apprehengion of the thieves. A. F. Hanson, law '80, of New York, will erect a residence in tbis city next spring, on Fourth-st, next to his fatherin-law'8, Wm. McCreery. He expects to take up his residence in thil city. The Sundny afternoon temperance meetings in Cropsey's hall, are growing in popular favor. Last Sunday Rev. Mr. Ryder, of the Oongregational church, briefly revifwed the tempertnce work done in tbis city during the past ten years A fellow about 20 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, fairly well dressed, is going through the country begging money, claiming that he wants to have his eyes treated at the hospital. He is an impostor and our farmer friends should treat him ascordingly. Besides ocating the new school building on the north side of the present one, as we stated last week, the following building committee wag appointed : Judge W. D. Harriman, chairman, J. E. Beal, secretary, W. B. Smith, C. Mack and Joe T. Jacobs. Wm. Copeland applied for a diyorce from his wife, in the Washtenaw county circuit court, last December. Single bless edness didn't prove to be what it was in the days of their youth, and they agreed to agree again, and Tuesday he withdrew his application. A special meeting of the counol was held Tuesday evening. The time for payng taxes was extended until March lst, 1887. The matter of itiviting the legislature to this city, to look eer the University received considerable discussion. A resolution was passé d to the effect that the council join with President Angelí in extending to them an invitation. The building committee uf the school board have architects in Detroit and Chicago drawing plans and speeifications for tbe net building. The first floor is tobe used for a library room and the grammar school, the 8econd floor for a large hall, with a galleíy. We hope they will look to the interests of our children, and if posible avoid having any reoitation rooms above the third floor in either building. Would it not be agood suggestion to convert the third story of the présent building into a large auditorium, which is used but occasions! ly, and make the new building entirely recitation rooms, library, etc. About 500 nvitation8 will be issued this year for Co. A's masqueiade. Tickets are on sale by members of the company, As the proceeds wi'l go towards fixing up the armory, the citizens ghould buy a ticket when the boys ome around to see them. In speaking of the boquet, at the Jackson Grey's recepion, Monday eveninp, the Citizen says of our popular caterer: "The e (the tables) were in charge of A. F. Hangsterfer, of Ann Arbor, and a corps of sixteen assistant, who did their work with oommendable skill and courtsey. It was a rich and lavish feast, made attactive to the senses with elegant display of silver, glas, cutlery and flowers. The undertakers closed their session in this city last Thursday evening, as per program published in The Register. At t' ie close of Dr. Herdman's lecture to them on embalminffj'he was presented with a fine olJ headed cane. The most of them left on the evening trains, and many we-e the words of praie spoken of O. M. Martin, who furnished the sleigbs free of charge, which carried them around to view the city. At the annual meeting of the ünitarian church last week, Prof. J. W. Lrngley and Mr. Jo8eph Whitlark were re-elected trustees for the term of three years. Reports were read as follcws : From the Pastor, Mr. Sunderland; from the trustees, by the chairman, Judge Harriman ; from the Treasurer Mr. Whitlark; from the Sunday School, by the tssistant Superintendent, Miss Ida A. Morrish ; from the Unity Club, by the President Phillip R. Whitonan; from the Lhdies' Union, by Mrs. Prof. Burt; from the Library Committee, by the chairman, Prof. W. H. Pettee ; from the Bible class and the Sunday afternoon Religious class, by Mrs. Sunderland. Al! the various activities of the church are going on excellently. The society was never more prosperous.
