The news of the recent severe illness of Mr. B. J. Baklwin, the daring, open handed speenlator whose name bas been the synonym for luck on the Pacific coast, will be received with regret by all who have met bim. Baldwin went from Butler county, O., to Indiana at the age of 7 years. At 22 he was a merchant in Valparaíso, Ind. He built l li re e canalboats, the first to ply betwce:: Chicago and St. Louis, in 1848. In 1850 he was a grocer in Ilacine, Wis. In ViXi he started for San Francisco with a large stock of horses, which he sold out in Salt Lake City at a large proflt. Arriving in San francisco he bought and sold two or three hotels. Then lie went into the brick tra' Ir. From bricks he went into the livery business, which he followcd for sevcn years. Selling uut the livery 'm-iness he next opencd in Virginia City, Ncv.,inthe lumber trade, dealing also in real etrtate and niim'ng stocks. Ho rarae out of the mining región at last with 19,000,000, and built iu San Francisco the Baldwin hotel, one of the costlicst hostelrlet on the continent. He also purchased souie 50,000 acrei of fue best land arouud Los Angelw in sou the rn California. He has erected many farm houses i u tliis plantation, and hcre he spends ïnuch of his time aniong hi.s orange gruyes and vineyards. An intense lover of bone laiin;;, he is snre to turn up when there is some great turf contest. And ulthough he is called "Lucky" Baldwin, there i- n o doubt that hard work and foresight have had mucb to do with his success.
