To the Editor : Very few of your readers are aware of the boomins; of our city and the University without cost to them, by taxation or donation of any kind, by the glee club of the University. While spending the Sabbath in the beautiful city of Rockford, 111., I overheard several persons gpeak about the Ann Arbor glee club, and never having heard them, I decided to remain and hear them, and was well repaid for so doing. Like the audience I was more than pleased with their singing. On reaching Rockford they were met by Mr. Harry Forbes, a University young man, who took part of the boys to his home, the remainder going to the new Leonard hotel. After the concert a reception was given them by Mr. atid Mrs. Forbes, where they met many of the musical and literary people of the city. Mr. Geo. Haviland, the manager, informed me that that was only a repetition of the reception thev received wherever they had been since leaving Ann Arbor. What I started out to say, was, that such booming paid to invest a little in. as it is much like "casting your bread on the water," it surely will briDg its reward, by increasing the membership of the University. Such visitations among the citiee of our sister states, stirs up the desires of the young to come nere, and most of you párente know what it is to attempt to refuse a fond child, and many a parent is awakened to his duty to send them, or bringthem here. Now, what is our duty in the matter ? To see that the University sends out each year, its chosen select ones for music and rehearsal, and that the city, or those who can, chip their dollars together and charter a car, and on its side spread the banner "The Ann Arbor Glee Club of the University of Michigan." No business house or manufactory does as well without adrertising, as do tho9e who advertise, and there is co form or device that can better this mode of advertising our city schools. The party who have just returned are young gentlemen cf whom no one need be aghamed, though such might go out, and they can t;ive you a good entertainment, and one that is rich and pleasant tor all. They are to give one of their concerto in the University hall soon, and go here thetn and see if I am not correct. Rockford, HL, April 4th.
