Blaine was present Saturday at the laying of the stone of the Carnegie library at Edinburgh, and made the address of the occasion. Hong Di, a Chinese domestic who murdered Mrs. Billyon at St John, Cal., about a month ago, was takenjfrom jailat Colusa on Monday and tianged by a mob. Mike Weaver, a noted Chicago burglar and sneak-thief, was released from Joliet Saturday, after serving eight years and nine montas of his fif teen-year term. John D. Van Gordon, aged sixty-nine, was stung on the wrist at Dingman's Ferry, Pa., reoently, and died within a few moments as he was entering his house. The Pacific squadron of United States men-of-war has been ordered to rendezvous at Honolulú. The Asiatic squadron will also be ordered to Hawaii il necessary. Valuable discoveries of oil are said to have been made near Nacogd oches, Tex. Six wells have been sunk, ani their product is already being received at New Orleans. It is reported that every county in the State of Missouri will send a representative to Washington with the St Louis committee to urge the President to visit that town in the fall. Stanley himself was ill from excessive heat. An epidemie, supposed to be diphtheria, is raging on Cockburn Island, in Lake Huron. Manv deaths have occurred, and the inhabitants are panic-stricken and fleeing for their lives. There is no physician on the island. An elabórate silver testimonial was presented to Mr. Gladstone Saturday by the American visitors in London. The formal address was made by Mr. PuliUer, of New York. Mr. Gladstone replied in an eloquent rule speech. Judge Goebel announced at Cincinnati Thursday that to the estates of Archbishop Purcell and Father Edward Purcell, J. B. Mannix, the assignee, and his bondsmen o wed 1314,500. Governor Hoadly, one of Mannix' s sureties, ha. been released by the payment of $62,500.
