When the Mayor pounded his gavel on the desk last Monday evening, the aldermen immediately sett'ed down to business, and for three hours and a half they distinguished themselves by transacting business pertaining to the interests of the city and not fighting over petty personal matters, as they so often do. THE SLAUGHTER HOUSES. A lengthy communication was received from Dr. Breakey, member of the Board of Health, in relation to the slaughter houses in the Fifth ward, stating that the public health was jeopardized by their presence. The communication was referred to a committee consisting of the Mayor, city attorney, aids. Ware, Martin and Hammond. THE FINAKCE COMMITTEE, through their chairman, Aid. Swift, made the following report ehowing the amounta paid out of the different funds : First ward fund $ 33 62 Second " " 178 56 Third " " __ 76 07 Fourth " " 131 93 Fifth " " 5 12 Sixth " " 94 30 General street fund 49 11 General fund __. , 616 90 Contingent fund 308 91 Total - 1.489 52 ♦ ELECTRIC LIGHT COMrANY. The general fund committee reported th&t the company refused to raise electric lights in some locations, some were not raised to proper height, and that the company refused to raise them higher. Several of the aldermen aired their views on the subject, and unless the company will do as the council intend they shall, there is trouble ahead, in which the council will ño doubt come out on top. The discussion come to an end by ald. Swift offering the following resolution, which was unanimously adopted : Resolved, That the T. H. Electric Company be notified to comply with the structions of the general fund committee in raising and locating their city lights within the next thirty days, or payment will be stopped until such changes are made. THE F1RE DEPARTMENT. The committee on fire department reported favorably on the communication of chief Sorg, eubmitted at the last meeting, ' to allow the fire department to organize a hook and ladder company, to consist of the following persons: Larry Dunn, John Burn8}' John Campion, John Kinney, Wm. Kennedy, Sam McLaren, J. Hauser, and Fred Stise. The report was adopted. The Toledo and Ann Arbor railroad company presented a request to have Second-st opened to Jefferson-st, to give them an opening to the site where they intend locating their new depot. Referred to street committee. A RESIGHATION. William Champion tendered his resignation as patrolman. About six months ago he was agked to resign by the council, which he did, but was reinstated by the present coutcil. The ballot was ordered taken for the election of his successor. Five ballots were taken, and there being no choice the matter was deferred until the next meeting. City treasurer Sorg made the following report, showing the different amounts paid out from the several funda and the amounts remaining in the several funds : MONEY DISBVRSED. Swift, Ware and Martin were appointed a committee to wait upon Aid. Seabolt and ask him to withdraw his resignation, which was presented at the laat meeting. NEW ÑAMES. Aid. Kesrns moved tbat the name of Bowery-st, in the Fourth ward be ohanged to that of Lawrence-st, also so muoh of Catharine-st between N. Main-st and its intersection with Miller avenue, be changed to Miller avenue ; also that the name of Cemetery-st be changed to Geddes avenue. Carried. WATER WORKS. Aid. Wines offered the following resolution, which was unanimously carried : Resolved, That a committee of five be appointed, of which the Mayor shall be chairman, and the city attorney a member, to investígate the water works, and also to determine what additional means of eommunication by telephone, for fire purposes, is aeeded ; the committee to report at the next regular meeting. The Mayor appointed as the additional members of the committee Aids. WineB, Ware and Martin. Aid. Allmendinger offered the following : At s recent meetmg of the Business Men's Association of this city a request was unanimously adopted asking the council to submit to the voters of the city a proposition to raiee, by taxation, $5,000 to advertise the city and induce manufacturers to lócate here. Said agsociation is composed of nearly all the business men and many of the tax payers of the city. Iu response to their request, be it Resolved, That a special election be held at Firemen's hall, from 12 o'clock noon, of Friday, August 26th, until 4 o'clock in the afternoon, at whioh a proposition to raise $5,000 by taxation shall be submitted to the tax payers ol the city, said sum to be used ia advertising the city and advancing the manufacturing interests of the city by loan or bonus. The amount voted, if any, shall be made a fund known as the "city improvement fund," and werrants may be drawn upon it by the council as upon other fands. At the election ballots shall be used reading : For the tax of $5,000 for advaiicing the business and manufacturing interests of the city - Yes. And For the tax of $5,000 for advancing and encouraging the business and manufacturing interests of the city - No. Aids. Allmendinger and Wines spoke in favor of the resolution. Unanimously carried. A motion was made and carried instructing the street committee to put up a railing on the Pontiac-st bridge. Just at the close of the meeting Aid. Allmendinger offered a reaolution inviting President and Mrs. Cleveland to visit Ann Arbor, while on their western trip. It was carried amidst much confusión.
