The social season for 1887-8 has been fairly opened n Arm Arbor, and a very brilliant one it promises to be. Three receptions were given last week, at which the elite of the ciy were invited. On Thurday, f rom ihree to six and eight to eleven o'clock, Judse and Mrs. T. M. Cooley gave a very brilliant recep tioa to their manv fr'ends at their pala liil residence at No. 76 South Stite st. The one in the afternoon wa designed principally for ladies and eldeily people, and the one ia the evening for the young and middleaged. About five huDdred were present and erjyed the hospitality of the host and hostess. It was wliile attending this reception that President Angell was informed ot hie a[pointment on the fisheries commifsion. Rnlreshments were served by Granger. Mrs. A. F. Gay, gave a very pleasant keuledrum, at her residence, corner of Huron and Divi-ion sts, last Thursday atiernoon, f rom three to six o'clock. A number of ladies were present and a v ry pleasant and sociable time was had. On hst Friday afteimon, from four to six o'clOL-k, Mrs. Geo. A. D.mglass entertaired a Ixrge i uiiher of triends at her residence, N ■. 14 S. University ave. Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Hall will entertain their Iriends at their pleasant home Friday evening. Dancing will be indulged in. President Angelí is in Detroit. J. J. Goodyear was in Detroit, Tuesday. W. W. Wines was in Detroit, Monday. Samuel Krause was in Cnicago over Sunday. D. S. Millen is spending the week in Chicago. Dr. George A. Hendricks was in Detroit, Tuesday. C. S. M Hen will go to Chicago to-morrow, for a few days' visit. Mr. snd Mrs. Wm. Wagner are expected home from their trip to Kansas, this evening. Ernest and Chas. Mann, of Detroit, visited their father, Emanuel Mann, over Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. William E. Manning, of Salem will celébrate their golden wedding, Wednesday, 0t. 12. A. J. Shively, of Brooklyn, N. Y., was the Ruest of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Best, on W. Huron-st, Wednesday. Mrs. Good and Mrs. Schneider, of Napierviile, lik, mother and sister of M s. D. F. Sjhairer, will pay her a vit.it next we-k. Miss Lee Cowan has retnrned from her exstern trip, nccompinied by Mr. and Mrs. Nap er, who intend making a short visit at her tather, Mr. M. Cowan. Rev. J. G. H ldner. and wife, of Detroit, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. G Josenhans over Sunday. The reverend gentleman occupied the pulpit in ihe Bethlehem church in the evening. Mrs. Alftvd Smiih, of Stratford, On'., ig the guest of Mr.v J. L. Stone for a few days. Mrs. Smith isa cjusin ot President Cleveland, but neverthfless she condemns Grover's mode of running a government.
