That popular actor and gentleman, Rol&nd Reed, will be seen in " Humbug " at the opera housf, Monday evening, Ojtober 31st. Roland Reed has tiokled the town with ''Humbug," and f the clerk of the weather wouli giys him a fair chance there is no doubt that the performance would be continued for a considerable period. But the Bijou opera house is a very arid spot in midsummer, and it will be difficult even with so funny a piece as Mr. Marsden's to draw the people into it. The plot of the comedy has frequently been described in these columns in connection with ita presentation elsewhere. There is no uGcessity for going into the details. Some of the êituations are exceedingïy comic - especialiy those of the last act - the dialogue ia lively and amusing, and there is some attempt at varied characteriz ition. [jn Jack Luster, the pushing, voluble, deceptive schemer who marries a womau that is also an adventuress, under a mutual misunderstanding, Mr. Reed has a role that suits him thoroughly. Of course, Mr. Reed simply repeats himself. He is always the same on account of hia marked peculiaritiea of voice, manner and appearince, but that is som thing in which Mr. Reed resembles many of the most success:ul, or, rather, most popular comedians of the dayTJ In representing the cheeky, smooth-tongued ycung American of the sound to succeed order he is sui generis. As Jack he tells lies wilh delicious audacity and readiness, sings the popular songs of the day in that peculiar voice which outrages every tenet of vocalism and yet makes the people roar with laughter, plays the piano, imitates yebarnyard fowl, gives a condensed version of " TheMikado" and wears some of the most astomshiug tailors' )roduots that eye of mortal has ever rested ipon.
