Erwin F. Smith, who graduated ia the University in 1886. has since beea connected with the mycologicsl section of the depariment of agriculture in Washington, where he lias been studying grape rot and yellow8 in peaehes. His study ha3 !ed him to v8t the fruit regions of Maryland and Delaware. The Farm and Home of Dover, Del., recently roentioned Mr. Smith's return to Washington, and with fiattering comments on his work said: "Four thousand pits from premature peache8 have been sent to the experiment stations of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Missouri, where they will be planted, and if they grow wjh De watched to see whether the yellows develop in them. One thousand healthy trees have been budded with diseased buds or with healthy buds from diseased trees, and 500 other healthy trees have been budded with healthy buds to serve as control experiments. This is for the purpose of proving whether or not the disease can be communieated by iuoculation in this manner." These field experimente Mr. Smith will follow up with microscopical work in Washing in the endeavor to find a remedy for yellows in peaches.
