One drum was heard, a poor shrill Drum As the back track was taken by Grover And the Bourbons looked unommonly glum At the flag which they couldn'i recuver ! He took the back track of a Thursday nieht A penitent letter preparing, By the beiims of the blazing northern light And Daniel softly sweuring ! An angry growl from the President stole And he cerned to the calm beholder I.ke a man that had put his foot In a hole Ulear up to the blade of his shoulder. Formal and eold his epiRtle ran- He exhibited little dejection- But steadfastly gazed on the face of Dan And thought of next year's election ! He thought as he finished and signed his name And read hit rescindment over, That the bojs in blue would tread down his fame And make it quite lively for Grover ! Loudlj they'll talk of his copperhead style, And curse him both frequent aud hearty ; Yet little he'll reek. retaining thesraile Of the; flne old Bourbon party ! But half of his heavy task was o'er Wheu the news from the country reached him, And he knew as he read how the veteians swore That each loyal heart impeached him ! Slowly and sadly he bit his thumb, On liis brow was a cloudlet of thunder- He spoke not to Dan, but he did beat a Drum And they left him alone with hls blunder !
