Washington, Nov. 4.- Chief Justice Waite received at his residence in thls city at 6 o'clock last evening, tnrougb. the postofíice, a box contamina a contrivance reeembling an infernal machine, but the breakng of a wire by the post-ofBce clerk in Btampinsr the box rendered the apparatus íaimless. The circumstance natnrally connecte itself with the Justice's delivery of the opinión of the Súpleme Court in the case of the Anarchists, and the general opinión la thot friends of the eondemned men intended to take the lile of the Chief Tustice. Washington, Nov. 5.- It has been ascertained that the sending: of the bomb to ühief Justice Waite's residence was a cruel íoax and was the work oí Sherburne G. ïopkin8, who makes a precarious living by Belling sensational news to newspaper correspondente, and Arthur D. Sperry, a reporter. Both men had been arrested Hcpdns confessed the deed, and said his object was to créate a sensation and make some money by selling the news to the papers.
