President Payne
Uarper's Weekly of last week has a fine picture of Prof. W. H. Payne of this city, and an appreciative biographical notice of him in connection with his appointment to the presidency of the State Normal college of Tennessee. It says: 'President Payne is a native of Farmine;ton, Ontario ocunty, N. Y., and, save three terras ia Macedón academy, was educated mainly in the county schools of bis native town. Alter teaching for three years in Parmington and Víctor, he removed in 1858 to Micbigan, and supervised tchools insuccesi-ionat Three Ri vers, Nileg, Ypcilanti, and Adrián. In 1879 he was elected professor of the science and art oL teaching in 'the University of Michigan. President Payne has made several important contributions to the literature of his profession."
