Social to the membera of the Ilobart Guüd Friday evening, Dec. 9. The use of ink bottles is prohibited in 1 the seminary rooms of the ltbrary. A course in Riuaseau's Contrat Social will be offered by Prof. Walter, next semester. On account of theillness of his wife, the work of Dr. Georg wasslightly interrupted last week. J. T. Jacobs & Co. gave 5 per cent. of their last week's sales to the gymnasium fund, and it amounted to $G5. Setne of the seniors are striving fcr the adoption by their class of so ridiculous a class hat as a cream colored plug with gray band. The Beta Theta Pi fraternity had an initiation and bsnquet Saturday evening at which three freshmen "learned the copes." One hundred person, including students and professors, have pledged themselves to beoome members of Prof. Loisette's memory class. "Tewfik" looks natural again in the Argonaut and signs himself at the bottom of a very admirable comedietta in the last number of that live journal. Prof. Langley's lectures in elementary phy9ics and chemistry are becoming 80 popular that they are attended eaoh evening by an increasing number of visitors. Frank Gasser, law '88, who bas been severely afllicted the past two weeks with an acute attack of inflammatory rheumatism, was able to attend his classes again Tuesday. A disgraceful row oocurred Monday evening at the postoffice between a law student, whose name we withhold, and a clerk in Douglas' clothing store. No arrests were made. Prof. Calvin Thomas will give a new course, next semester, comprisiog a study of the Gothic language. The course will be philological and comparative in itscharacter as well as a historical study of wordforms. The new Corliss engine for the Mechanical laboratory is now in position, and will be ready lor operation as soon as the boilers)in the new engine house are in running order. The forge shops and foundry are also ready for use and will be opened to the students in about two weeks. The freshmen held a meeting last Saturday to decide on the question cf adopting class hats and gowns. So closely were the class divided on the subject and so stubborn each faction that after several hours quarreling they dispersed without passing a motion. The University glee club's Christmas trip has been abandoned. but the club will tnake a trip in the spring. They have made an addition to the club for '87-8_of four stringed instrument, mandolín, banjo, and two guitars, played by Ewald, Blair, Taylor, and Crowl. The Palladium board are anxious to secure as many contestants as possible for their prizes for U. of AI. class songs, and to that end offer the liberal prize of $25 for the best one, and a gold-headed cane or umbrella for the second best. Profs. Frieze, Walter, and Thomas will act as judges. The senior medies held their election last Saturday and chose the following officers : President, Honry Hulst ; vice-president, Miss Nellie Hollister; historian, Miss Christina Anderson ; poet, Geo. H. Conklin ; orator, W. L. Griffln ; prophet, Horace Wilcox; chaplain, F. W. Brewer; marshall, C. A. Fletcher. The Piranesi collection of etehinga comprising eome 1500 plates of scènes in Rome, Roman architecture, etc., which was purchased in Rome by Prof. Blisha Jones last year, is now being exhaustively catalogued in the library and will soon be made available for the use of Prof. Frieze's art classes.
