Thsre aro (0,000 colored Knlghts of Labor. Virginia is to have a state bureau of labor statistics. Labor unions in all large cities complain of labor bureaus sending men far away to work and starve, the work giving out. A large cotton f actory, 300 feet long by 75 feet wide,, is being built on top of the Cumberland mountain, North Carolina. Ivnights of Labor petitions are circulating asking congress to have all convict made goods plainly marked "Convict labor." Pennsylvania has abandoned prison labor, and in one prison 350 convicts are begging for something to do, as without occupation their iniprisonment amounts to solitary confinement. The twenty-second annuakconvention of the Bricklayers' International union will meet in Boston Jan. 10, 1888. Araong the subject to lx? discussed is the further reduction of working time from nine to eight hours. Tho English board of trade has made a report in which it alleges that the number of paupers in the country uw aro cnly Ü4.T to the 1,000, white in 1870 there won- 40 to the 1,000, and that the total number has fallen from 900,000 to 697,000, while the populatlon luis increaaed by 5,700,000. In London, it is alleged, there are now only 21 paupers to ],Oü(J inhabitauts.
