When a person for the sake of what is good in art or nature, perseveres in preeenting only the best, even thoagh it be not popular, that person deserves earnest commendation. Such an one is Miss Grace Hiltz who gave the song recital at the third Chamber concert last Saturday j ing. A program that was simply coloesal in its length and character was given mainly from memory by her without the slightest evidence of fatigue or failure. It was of a historical nature, and presented as well as could be in one evening, the gradual development of song for the last 200 years. Nineteen songa from sixteen different authors gave a very fair idea o the peculiarities of the Italian, Germán French, English and American writers lor the voioe. Miss Hiltz's manner is particularly pleaeing in its simple kindliness, and wins people even before she begins to sing. Her singing is characterized by spirit, amounting to enthusiastn, disiinct artioulation, thorough acquaintance with her songs and a kind of "go" that carries people along with her into any style of composition s.he may choose to interpret. The last number on the program was the Ave Maria of Gounod, with violio, piarjo and organ accompaniment. The only sure basis for such a project as this annuül series of conoerts is to provide a fund that raises it above the neceasity of depending upon the chance interest of the moment for financial security. Such a fund is provided this year by the generous response of ckizens and students to a 6even hundred dollar subscription, no small gum to be raised in a town of this size.
