The work of investigation, carried on y R few men, into the origin of cholera, eonsumption, typhoid fever, and scarlet fever, haB recently given another ahtonishing fact to the world. Pr. Klein and nd W.H. Power, of the medical department of local govern ment board, some time ago fhowed that they oould cause scarlet fever in a human being by feeding milk frotn acertain diseased cow. Althoiigh the diseased cow apparently had not soarlet fever, yet its inilk contained the scarlet fever gerin and would produce scarlet fever in the human being. Not satisfied wit.h this, these men secured a little blood from sotne scarlet fever patients in a hospital, found that the blood contained the scarlet fever germ, and then iooculated two calves with 8ome cultures from the blood. The salves were killed in 10 and 20daye, and their blood contained the scarlet fever genuB. ïwo calves were then fed witfa milk which had been mixed with some of the cultures from the blood of the scar'et fever patients, and it produced in thema dsease losely resemlling the disease in ihe COW whieh had been proved to be t'ie cause of a scarlet fever outbreak. Thua, so far as is known. tliis gorm called micrococctus scarlaÜDic, will produce scarlet fever in mankind and a disease in cows apparently much diflerent.
