New York, March 13. - That portion of the late Henry Ward Beecber's di;iry which ber.rs on the Tilton scan Jal has just been jiuijl alii'd. The statement was written a year after the trial had closod, and he Btipulates that it Bhould not be published until Beveral months alter hls death. As a st. temen t of f act, or as a history of the case, the diary diflers in no essential particular from the Btory tolt1 by Mr. Beecher on the Btand. He declares he was RUilty of nothing except error of jntlffment, and concludes aB fol ows: "Tbatlh:ive grlevously erred in judgment with this nerDlexed case no one is more sc)OU8 than I am. I choso the wrong path and ucoepted a disastrous guidanoe in the begincinR, and have indeed traveled on a 'rough and ragged eilge' in n.y prolonged eflorts to suppress this scandal, which has at last sjrread so much desolation through the lana. But I can not ttdmit that I erred tn desirinK to keep these matters out of sight. In this respect I appeal to you and to all ChrisUan men to judge whetder a most any personal Bacriüce ought not to have bean made rather than to suffer the moráis of an entire community, and especlally of the yoang, to be corrupted by the fllthy details of soandalouH falsehooits. daily iioratod and amplifltid. for the gratiflcatlon of lmpure curloslty and demoi-alization of every child that ts oW enough to read."
