amount of patriotism, it is yet true that both parties in Congress are largely playing for vantage ground in the presidential conteet. This is really of more irnportance to them than reduetion of the revenue or tariff reform. It is more largely true of the Democratie than of the Republican party. The Republicans already have their position chosen ; the Demócrata have yet to choose their ground. Some of them would do the best they could behind the weak fortification of free trade ; others want a mixture in the make-up of the breastworks, and they probably will win. The Demócrata will go into the campaign with mild free trade in some parts of Michigan, but with strong protection in the Saginaw yalley. We should think that honest Democratie frae traders and protectionists would gag at such methods of politica! warfare.
