Last Saturday morning, probably about 2 o'clock, the safe in Swathell, Kyer, and 'eterson's flouring mili, on N. Main-gt, was blown open. The burglars drilled near the bolt and inserted gunpowder, irobably without the slightest qualms of consoience, although attached to the door of the safe was a card on which the safe's combination was written. The only chartable construction that can put on such conduct is that they couldn't read. Four reare ago the safe was opened in the same vay by burglars, and ever sinee, the firm, cnowing that it was not burglar-proof, lave been careful not to leave large amounts of money in it, and have kept the combination on the safe, as they dld not want a repetition of the gunpowder act, whieh might set fire to the mili. This time there happened to be a little more money than usual in the safe, and the burlars walked off with $40 and a gold pen. The firm are convinced that it was done )y "local talent." It was certainly done with neatness. Sacks of flower were )laced in front of the safe for the iron ioor to fall on, thus lessening the noise. For their tools they levied on a blackamith shop in lower town and on the tooi house of the M. C. R R.
