Last Saturday under the auspioes of the Dase ball association, the most enjoyable and Euooessful field day held iu some rears was witnessed by nearly 800 spectaors. The day was a most perfect one, and every thing went off in first class shape, although the athletes succeeded in reaking none of the amateur records. Tohn E. Duffy, however, in the 100 yards dash, feil short of the best record, viz , .0 seconds, by only two fifths of a eecond. He also made the 220 yards dash n time, closely crowding the championship record. In throwing the hammer, J. ï. Gardner, a medie, won the contest ; distance, 04 ft., lij inche8. In the next contest, standing broad jump, Mr. Dacharm won over his competitors by clearng 12 ft. 8 incfees. The walking match was won by Mr. Johnson in 9 minutes, L2 2-5 seconds. R. O. Pair put the shot 30 ft. 7 inches. The next contest was a ïurdle race of 120 yards, and proved one of the prettiest contests of the afternoon. Ducharin and Von Inwager were the contestants. Van Iawager led at first, but as :he last hurdle was reached they were scarcely even, but in keeping this Van Inwager feil and the prize was given to Ducharm. The time was 20 seconds. In the heavy weight two medies engaged, Jackson and Miller, and the contest was easily won by Jackson. The running high ump was won by Van Inwager, height 5 t't. 6 inches. J. D. Campbell won the run and jump, clearing 18 ft. 5} inches. In the light weight wrestlmg there were four entries, Scovell vs. Steers, and Smith vs. Butts. Both pair3 were evenly matched and the contests werè exciting. After a long strugle in the first round, Ssovell threw Steers Then Soiith and Butts appeared. Butts was very much heavier than Smith, and evidently much stronger, but it was soon evident that Smith was more than his match in agiliiy, cunning and science. Batts woa the first fall, but Smith won the second, and the third was finally won by Butts. Scovell won the contest with Steers. W. C. Techenor, with a Star, won the mile bicycle race in four ïnir.utes and twenty-five seconds. The track was heavv. The hop, skip and jump was won by V. S. Lumley, distance 36 ft. 8 J inches. Seven contestants entered into the base ball throw, which was won by M. Wade, distance 118 yards. Mr. Griffin had no competition in the 440 yards dash. He won the race beyond a doubt, and was awarded the medal. The pigeon shooting was good, but was witnelsed by few. E. Von Suessmilch won by hitting 9 out of 10. The exhibition closed wiih a game of lacross. Every one was deüghted with the contests, and thanks to the association, a litile enthusiasm in atbletics is again aroused.
