SENATE. Washington, June 1.- Iu the Senateyes terday the bill to quiet the title of settler on the Des Moines river lands in Iowa wa passed. The conference report on the bil to establish a department of labor was accepted. Washington-, June 2.- The Senate yes terday passed the House bill to amend the Agricultural College act of 1862. The In dian Appropriation bill was cansidered In executive session the nomination o LieutenantGeneral Sheridan to be Gen eral of the Army was confirmed. Ad journed to the 4th. Washington, June 5. - In the Senate yesterday a large number of bilis were taken from the calendar, chiefly pension bilis, and passed. Tne Consular and Diplo matic bill was reported. The bill retiring General W. W. Averill and General Alfred Pleasonton, both with the grade of Major was passed. Washington, June 6. - The time was passed in the Senate yesterday in consider ing the Diplomatic and Consular Appropriation bill. THE HOUSE. Washington, June 1.- In the House yesterday the bill to créate a department o labor was passed asit came f rom the Sen ate. The debate on the Mills Tariff bil was resumed under the five-minute rule. Washington, June 2.- The Senate bil reviving for the benefit of LieutenantGen eral Sheridan the rank of General of the Army was passed in the House yesterday. Reports were presented favoring public buildings at Burlington, Ia., and Winona, Minn. The Legislativo Appropriation bill and the bill for the protection of Indian Territory officials were passed. The Tarif bill was further considered. Twelve private pension bilis were passed at the evening session. Washington, June 5.- In the House yes terday bilis wepe introduced to preven' food adulterations ; to amend the Interstate law, and to restrict the immigration of foreigners into the United States. Tile Senate bill making inauguration day a legal holiday was passed. Washington, June 6.- In the House yesterday the Tariff bill was further debated. A message was received from the President vetoing the bill for purchasing additional grounds for the public buildings at Council Bluffs, Ia. OTHEB NOTES. Washington, June 2. - The publie-debt statement yesterday shows the total debí to be $1,706,460,413; cash in treasury, $94,706,217; debt less cash in treasury, $1,180,014,150. Decrease during May, $1,618,690. Decrease since June 30, 1887, $99,414,577. Washington, June 2. - Never was quicker legislative work done than that of yesterday making Lieutenant-General Philip H. Sheridan General of the Army of the United States. In a trifle over an hour after the bill became a law the commission was in the hands of General Sheridan. Washington, June 4. - The House Saturday passed the Agricultural Appropriation bill. This bill appropriates $1,591,860 toward the Agricultural Department, an increase of $614,630 over last year. Washington, June 5.- General Sheridan had a hemorrhage yesterday afternoon which induced a recurrence of the heart failure, and his condition is most precarious. The attack was by far the most severe that the General has yet experienced.
