In-dianapolis, Ind.,July 5. - The committee appointed by the National Republican convention yesterday performed the first of its duties by officially informing Gener ïïarrison of his nomination for the Presidency. Thirty-three members of the committee were present. The residenea was filled to overflowing with newspaper correspondents and intímate f riends. At noon Chairman Estee stepped forward and, in a brief speech, informed General Harrison of his selection as the standard bearer of the Republican party in the National contest for the Pre3idency. Mr. Harrison responded briefly; he said be was deeply sensible and grateful for the high honor that the Chicago convention had conferred upon him. '-I accept the nomination," he said, " with such a deep sense of the duties and responsibilities of the office a9 to altogether exclude any feeling of exultation or pride. The principies of government and the practices in administration upon whioh issues are now fortunately so clearly made are so important In their relations to the National and individual prosperity that we may expect an unusually popular interest in the campaign. Relying wholly upon the considérate judgment of our fellowcltizens and the gracious favor of God, we will confidently submit our cause to the arbitration of a free ballot. As soon as may be possible I shall by letter communicate to your chairman a more formal acceptance of the nomination ; but it may be but proper to say that I have already examined the platform with some care, and that its declarations are in harmony with my views."
