A fire at Brewton, Ala., destroyod about half tlie towu, consisting oí sixteeu stores. Mrs. Hosanna Telch, of Gibson County, Ind., died írora the effect of a spider's bite. The saw mili of J. D, Spaulding, at Withce, "Wis., was burned Friday. Loss, $12,000. At Ozo, CsL, Sunday morning tire nearly destroyed the entire town. The loss is $30,000. The principal part of the business portion of Avon, Mass., was BWept away by fire on Saturday. La Frenciere's immense saw-mill, at Louisville, Can., were burned on Saturday. Loss, 1100,000. G. 11. Rider was hunged Friday at Marshall, Mo„ for the murder of R. P. Tallant two years aso. A fire at Fayetteville, Tenn., destroyed the Elk National Bank and several other busjness blocks. Mityray Lewis (colored) was hanged on Tuesday at tireenville, Miss., for the murder of his mistress. While eating dinner at Springfield, O., Thomas Perfect was choked to death by a portion of a potato. Crop reports from the Northwest give indications of a good yield and a prosperous season for the farmers. A battery of eight gas tanks in Ludlow, Ky., exploded Saturday and injured flfteen men, four of them fatally. Colonel J. M. Dunn, president of the Atlanta & Florida Railway Company, died at Atlanta. Ga., on Monday. The Brush-Westinghouse electrie light plant at New Orleans was burned Sunday, entailing a loss of $100,000. Owing toexcessivecompetition the Grant Locomotive Works at Paterson, N. J., have been compelled to shut down. White Caps have appeared in Lee County, W. Va., and unmercifully flogged a number of degraded women. Hon. P. Darden, Grand Master of the tional Grange, died at his home in Jefferson County, Miss., on Tuesday. Ebenezer Stanyard, the Youngstown murderer,was hanged in the Columbus (O.) penitentiary early Friday morning. The electors of Jackson, Ind., defeated the appropriation for the Ohio, Indiana & Missouri River railroad by 11 votes. George Bancroft, the distinguished historian, was badly mjured on Sunday by falling down the steps of his cottage at Newport. Joseph Soup, of Charleston, S. C, while insane on Saturday killed his wife by driving a file into her head and then cut his own throat. At Btanton, Ky., John Rose and S. S. Hall, his son-in-law, fought a duel on the street. Rose was wounded and Hall instantly killed. A cowboy rob bed a bank at La Junta, Col., on Saturday of $25,000. He presented a pistol at the cashier and made him de liver the cash. Conrad Jackson (colored) was hanged on Monday at Waco, Tex., for the murder of John Talley, a prom nent white planter, one year ago. The iron-workers' strike at Pittsburgh, Pa., was practically over on Saturday. But few manufacturers reraained who had not signed the scale. The Orphans' Home at South Wabash, Ind., was drstroyed by fire on Friday. The children escaped and the contents of the building were also saved. At East Buffalo, N. Y., on Tuesday Mrs. Mary F. Floss and her sister-in law, Mrs. Mary F. Wittig, were burned to death by a kerosene lamp explosión. Tlie Department of State is informed that Mr. J. Harvey Brigham, of Louisiana, United States Counsel at Jamaica, died at Kingston Saturday morning.
