Chicago, July 17. - John Bates, said to be Chicago's oldest inhabitant, was instantly killen by a Baltimore & Ohio traĆ­a at the foot of Thirty-sixth street. He was walking on the railroad track and being deaf did not hear the approach of a train on the track next the one on which he stood. Just as the train reached him he stepped in front of it and was killed. Mr. Bates was one of the original settlers of Chicago, haying come here in 1832.
