The 6fty-third anniversary of the Baptist state convention began lts session in the First Baptist church oí Ann Arbor last evening, and will close on Sunday evening. More than 300 delegates are now present. Rev. Dr. E. H. E. Jameson, of Latsing, dehvered the annnal eermon. Dr. Jameson's theme was "The good time comiog," based on the prophecy of Isaiah that "As the earth bringeih forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all cations." He took an extremely optimistic view of CLristiaoity. The pa9t has largely been a period of soed-sowing. Much of the seed has sprung up and borne fruit in the salvation of man aud in a better and truer civilization, but á great deal of gosael seed bas not yielded fruit. It is not ilead but will spring up and bear fruit in the days to come. He predicted that through the preaching of the Gospel the nations would acknowledge one God, and there would be a universal brotherhood. The program tor to-day Deludes an address by Rev. M. A. Willcox, D. D., president of Kalamazoo college, and by Rev. J. Snashall, Rev. P. Adkins and & Li. Little. This evening will be given up to women's missionary work. To-morrow afternoon Rev. A. E. Cook, of Cheboyjan, is down to discuss " Our great Rejublic and its need of the Gospel." Rev. i. Otto, of Detroit, is to speak on " What can we do lor the Germans." Rev. E. Eilis and Rev. A. E. Mather, are also to speak. Interesting work will be done Siturday forenoon fnd evenir.g. On Sunday morning, Rev. Wm. Ashmore, D. D., of Swatow, China, Home Secretary of the Missiouary Uaion, will preach in the Baptist church in the interest of the foreign missiona. He is the most noted missionary of the Baptists, and is one of their best speakers. Sunaay, at 3 p. m. Rev. J. Donnelly wi 1 make the report of the committe on the State of Religión. In the evenine Rev. J. A. Johnston, of Kalamüzoo, will give the closirg sermón. The Carman family, to which the popular Baptist pastor of Ann Arbor beíongs, will be here over Sunday and supply tbe musiu for Sunday's service.
