Senate- On the 12th House bilis were pasied giving omen the right of suffrage at school elections in the city oí Detroit; to amend the charter of the city of Cheboygan; Senate billa to amend the charter of Kalamazoo: authorizing the city of Ann Arbor to borrow $),ÜOO for the erect:on of a hospital; allowing omen to vote for and hold the office of school inspector in Detroit. House- Bills were passed prohibiting boards of registraron from holding sessions in saloons or in any building where liquors are soW; to amend the law authorfz ng macudamized roads in Bay County. The bill to increase the tax upon the sale of liquor or beer to $800 a year was recomtnitted. The bill to allow women to vote for and hold the office of echool Inspector in Detroit was passed. Senate- On tho I3tu bilis were passed to regúlate tfre employment of women, children and young persons in the several factores of the State; authorizing the acceptancc of tho amount appropriated by Congress for an agricultural exper ment station; to provide for the iormation of companies for ritting up and leasing grounds for catnp-mcetings and other religious assemblies. HODSE- Most of the session was occupied in a wranjle in committee of the whole over abill I ie salary of coroners in Wayne County at a sum not exceeding $1.800. A voe of congratulation to Senator Thomas W. Palmer uponhis appointment as Minister to Spain was passed. Senate - Biils were passed on the J4th to amend the charter of the city of Pontiac; creating a new ward and providing polling places and inspectors of election in the township of Burton, Cheboygan County. A favorable report was made on the Dill to allow mutual flre insurance companies to insure buildings in cit.es without conforming to the standard form of policy. Eulogist e resolutions upon the death of Hon. Moses W. Field, one of the univers ty regents, were passed. House - A bill was passed authorizinsj Grand Rapids to borrow Ï8J,000 for water works improvements. Considerable t me was taken up over a discussion ot a new Sunday observance law, and the measure was finally defeated. The Lácense Committee reported favorably a bill to tax the selling of liquor at retail $300, to tax wholesalers $:,000 ayear and to raise the tax on brewers from $05 to $800 a year. Senate - B lis wero passed on tha 15th for two election pecincts in Fenton, Genesee County, and in Hancock, Houghton County; authorizing the township of Hillman, Montgomery County, to borrow money to pay its float.ng iiidebtedness; to amend the charter of Kalamazoo City; to authorize gas companies to increase their capital stock in the larger cities. The üovernor appointed and the Senate confirmed John Atltinson. of Detroit, and B. F. Graves, of Adrián, members of the Board of Managers for the Soldiers' Home at Grand Rapids; Herman Ivefer, of Detro t, Regent of tbs State Univeralty, in place of Moses W. Field, aeoaaafed. House- B lis were passed to incorpórate the village of Highiand Park, Ingham County; to authorize the villagC3 of Boriien Springs and OronodBeirien County, to borrow money forpulilic improvements; to amend the charter of the city of Pontiac; authorizing the city of Cadillac to sell certain cemetery lands; to permit the mortgag ng of real estáte by admintstrators, executors and guardians with an order of the judge of probate; to prevent carrying explosives in any car or velncle used for transportation of passengers. Senate- A resolution was Introduced on the 18th urging upon the War Department the necessity of a survey for a ship canal between Lakes Superior and Michigan. The claim was made that it would shorten the round trip distance between Michigan and Superior points of 540 miles, and greatly avert the dangers of navigation. The bill appropriating $8,350 to the State weather service was agreed to. House - Nobus nessof importance was transaoted.
