Minister Denby
Indianapous, Intl., March KI. - The American missionaries to China and many eitizens of this country now resident there have forwarded to President Harrison through Rev. James MeLeod, of this city, numerously-signed petitions requesting the reappointment of Colonel Charles Denby, the present American Minister to China. Forty-two inissionaries, representing different boards, send a separate petition. A very largely-signed petition is also sent from Cantón, petitioning for the retention of Charles Seymour, Consul to Cantón. Dr. McLeod will send the petitions at onca to the President The petitions speak of Mr. Denby's efficiency and fidelity, hls thorough acquaintance with the needs and interests of the American communities in the Chinese Empire, hls fainiliarity with the method of Chinese diplomacy, his judiclous and Buccessful management of contested cases in which missionary interests have been involved, and the belief of the Chinese that the withdrawal of a diplomat is eqiiivalent to disapproval.
