A dual life lurk In the ;oul Of eveiy one, I ween : The one doth nlay the actor's role, The other is un-een. We visit the opera, or the play, And watch the public trend LeKt ignoranee shnuld display, Or popular taste ofltnd ! So. though It roay have been "a treat, " We do not dure to ny so; But elowly scan ea' h lace we meet, And theu make up "'our ratio." We Kreet an aequaintanre at the door With a cordial "glad you've come;" And then aide. "what a dreadful Dore, So fearfully humcrum ! " On vital issups nfthe day We oft withhold iipininns, To hear what the "Dear Select" muy say And thus become mere minions! Whpn the heart is sore, a merry jest We give to the carcless throng; The sorrows that rankle in the heart We stille with a soiir. And so these doub'e lives we live. Each with ihe other vieing ; No hint ol the hidden life to give The surface uuderlying!
