In his speech before the legislative commiltees last week. Dr. Maclean said : "If I object to this appropriation. it 8 because I fear it [the appropiiation] rnay open a etuniblin? block to a far wider and grealer object." What tlns " far wider nd greater object" is it il not hard to surmise. Nothinp Bhortof the dismembertnent of the University and the building up of a medical college in Detroit, we suspect, will satisfy Dr. Maclean. That Dr. Maclean has been thorough!y beaten at every point in argument is Yerjr clear. Tub Kegisteb this -week prints a synopsis of speeches before the legislativo committees, in which it is shown by fipurfs drawn from official report that the University hospitals furnish plenty of good material for illustruting lectures in medicine and surgery ; nd that, insteadof being inferior to Harper's hospital in Detroit, one of the hospitals in Ann Arbor ha had more case in six years than Harper's had in 22 years. Dr. Marlean's own statement in regard to dioica] facilities in Ann Arbor were read to him before the committees and were not denied. The Register printt1 them in anmher column.
