Some years ago the Frenchman, M. Pasteur, was believed to have discovered a remedy for hydrophobia. It was to inocúlate the patiënt wit h the attenuated virus of rabies. For this purpose Pasteur kept hundreds of dogs at his experimenting quarters. The animáis wero tortured without mercy, it is said, in order that M. Pasteur might pursue his theory. Paticnt3 who had been bitten by alleged mad dogs were sent to him frora all over the civilized world. The patienta wera not often suffering from rabies when they were sent to him. They went because it was f eared they would have rabies. They were inoculated and in nearly every instance recovered. This was considered a triuiuph for Pasteur. In most instances it was forgotten, ho wever, that thero was no certainty the patiënt would have had rabies if he had not gome to the Frenchman's hydrophobic studio. At any rate, tliough. Pasteur was high in public favor for several years. Eecantly, however, there is a roaction. The Australian government offered a reward of $100,000 for any plan that would rid the country of the rabbit pest. Pasteur proposed his homeopathie inoculation system. Ho sent a large quantity of virus to Australia. Babbits were caught and plentifully inoculated. But they did not go mad, ttiey did not bite other rabbits and they did not die. The plan was a dead failure as tried on rabbits. And now peoplo are beginning to think it ma y havo been a humbug all a long. Mean time the one f act that is ahsolutely certain is tho cruelty that has been practicad on Pasteur's dogs all these years.
