For The Kegister. To E . As the moon in her nocturnal journey Had clambered far up in the sky, And the warm winds, like footsteps of Morpheus, Kissed the trees with a low, soothing sigh ; As the owl ceased his mysterious mournings And repaired to his sheltering tree, And all Nature seemed calm and eontented, Then I dreamed, my owd loved one, of thee. In my dream was I changed to a woodbine, Growing high on an ancient oak tree, In a grand old primeval forest By the shore of the sunny blue sea. Like a sylph in her chariot of flowers, Close by me a clematis grew,- The most graceful of all Nature's beauties, And that vine, my darling, was you. Though the tree that supported the woodbine Leaned away from that on which you grew, And looked off o'er the deep blue waters, As if to lead my aflections there too ; Though the winds of the sea, and the old sun himself All lavished their charms upon me, Yet from the flrst my tendrils extended Stretehed out pleading, sweet angel, to thee. And there oft carne a beautiful Goddess At the calm, peaceful close of the day, Who seemed charged with the keeping of us two, And careful to train each in its way. And Venus had oft to me whlspered As she directed your branches and mine, That some day my tendrils extended Should intertwlue, dearest, with thine. Thns the woodbine grew hlgher and higher, E' er away from its protectlng tree, And its tender and resistless branches Ever reached out appealingly to thee. And at last Venus turned the clematis, And its blossoms on me seemed to beam, The two vines were just twining together, When- I awoke- alas.' twas but a oream.
