A regular meeting of the common council was held Monday evening, aldermen O'Mara, Barker and A. F. Martin, being absent. The mayor sent in a message presenting the resignation of Jobn S. Henderson, as a member of the Board of Health whose term expires in May, 1890, and appointing Martin Clark to fill the vacancy if the resignation waa accepted. The Board of Public Works ed that sidewalks be laid on the following streets : On the east de of Fifth-st from Madison-st to Hill-st.; on the w est eide of West Second-st, from Jefferson-st to Mosley-st ; on the east side of Broadway from ilaiden Lace to Cedar Bend ave; around block one, range two east ; on the south side of Madison-st from West Fifthst to East Fifth-st ; on the south side of Geddes-ave from Washtenaw-ave to Elmst ; on the west Bide of Ingalls-st from Catherine-st to North University-ave ; on the south eide'of Lawrenee st from Statest to Thayer-st ; in front of the premises owned by Mrs. C. M. Welsh on the corner of State-st and Ann-st; on the south side of West Jefferson-st from First-st to West Seventh-st; and that stone sidewalks be ordered built in front of the store on Mainst owned by Chas. Fantle, and occupied by J. M. Stafford ; and on Huron-st in front of the store occupied by Chas. Gibson. They also recommended that sidewalks be ordered built on the west side of West Fourth-st from Jefferson-st to Madison-st; on the east and we9t side of West Sixth-st from Jefferson-st to Madison-st. The sidewalks we re ordered built, the owners being notified to have them completed by July 30. The Fire Commissioners sent in a communication relative to the request cf the common council to have the commission dispense with the services of Jacob Hauser. A communication was received f rom Rueben Kempf stating that he had been assessed tor $60,000 personal property of R. Kempf & Bro., of Chelsea, which had been assessed there. He paid the tax to the city treasurer under protest, and now asked the council to refund the money. The matter was referred to the finanoe committee. The Standard Oil Co., through their agent, A. L. Ford, of Jackson, presented a petition asking that they be allowed to build oil worki, tank and store-houses in the city on the line of the T. A. A. 5 N. 11 R. R., between Miller-ave and Highst, the buildings to be built of brick and every precaution taken against accident and fire. The petition was referred to the fire department committee. The ordinanee relative to licenses was put on its final passage after a couple of amendments had been made. The street committee reported in favor of allowing a track be laid on Fontiac-st, from the Michigan Central freight depot to the Ferguson cart works, if the railroad company will contract to see the city harmless from all suits, cos's and damages. The report was adopted. The city clerk was instructed to write and find out the prices paid for gas in the other cities of this state, and action on the ordinanee granting the Ann Arbor Gas Co. a charter for another 30 years, was postponed until replies could be received. After a short recesa, the sidewalk committee reported in favor of ordering the sidewalks built as recommended by the Board of Public Works. The council then ordered the sidewalks built as recommended and over 100 of our citizens will soon receive notice to build new sidewalks or repair their old ones, at once. Aid. Herz ofl'ered a resolution that all sidewalks hereafter built on Washingtonst, from Main-st. to Second-st, f hall be 11 feet wide. AM. Spokes asked that all sidewalks on N. Fourth-st, be built four eet wide. Both resolutions were referred to the sidewalk committee. The Board of Public Works were lo wed $75 with which to build a new walk about Hanover Square. The clerk was instructed to request the representatives of the Standard Oil Co. to appear before the council and Pire Commissioners, as some explanations are necessary before permission to build can be granted. The salsry of the city treasurer was fixed at $100 for this year. The council ordered that all sidewalkg hereafter built on Huron-st, from Fifth-st, to State-st, be six feet wide, and on Fourth-st, from Catherine-st. north, four feet wide. The council then adjourned, leaving over until the next meeting another large batch of sidewalk orders which they did not have time to consider.
