This is important to over 7,000 carriera in the country. The law making elght houra a legal day's work for letter-carriers went into effet May 28, 1888, trat, as addltional carriers were not proTidd for, the spirit of the law was violated, as the carriers were obllge4 to work more than eight hours daüy. Tally was dlsmissed last Ootober and at once filed claim for SM hours' extra work, and ït has been allowed. Hundreds of such claims ara panding before the department and wlll probably also be allowed. There Ís ÍTOO.OOO.OOO. A shortage of eig-ht dollars was found in the new Bllver vault, where 85,600,000 silver dollars are stored, and a deficit of 15 in the old sllyer rault containing $45,000,000. Both shortages were iramediately made good by persons responsible for t.e safe keeping of the money. It is beliered that this money was lost during the recent floodlng of the vault Washington, July 30.- Tha preliminary report of Commissioner of Internal Revenue MaBon for the year ended July 38 shows that the total collections were 130,895,432, and the coat of collection f4,185,000, or a fraction less than a 2 per cent, the same as in 1888. The receipts were diyided as follows: From Bpirits, t74,313,306, an increase of ,uw,lWJ over tne previous fiscal year; tobacco, #31,860,860, an increase of $1,204,429; fermented liquors, #23,723,835, an increada of Í399,17; oleomargarine, 1894,348, an increase of 30,108; banks and bankers, #6,214, an Increase of #2,011; miscellaneoujs, ♦91,088, a decrease of #74,248. Taxwaspaid on 3,844,76,6.50 cigars, 1,862,726,100 cigar. ettee and 82,667,785 pounds of olemargarine.
