Regarding a gradúate of the L'niveraity of Michigan and a former resident of this county, the Detroit Sunday Free Press says : " Dr. William A. Ewing, who hae just been appointed sanitary superintendent in the New York Health Department to gucceed Dr. Day, who retires on account of ill health, is a Michigan " boy," hailing originally from Dexter. He is a gradúate of Michigan University, clase of '64, and is v idely known throughout the state. The position to which he has been appointed is an important and responsible one, with a salary of $4,800 ; and the term of office is during life or good behavior. Ag the chief executive officer of the Health J Department, the anitary superintendent has direct charge of nearly all the sanitary work in the city, as the Health Board only adopts his plans and recommendations in thousands of cases every year. The New York Tribune says of the new appointee: Dr. Ewing, the new superintendent, was graduated from the Beïlevue Hospital Medical College in 1869, and the next year he became connected with the Health Department as a vaccinatcr. ín 1873 he was appointed as assiatant sanitary inspector, and be was promoted to the office of sanitary inspector in 1876. He resigned his office three years ago to give more time to his private practico, after having been placed in charge of the night medical service. Dr. Swing has never been active in politics and hia record in the department was excellent. He is a member of the County Medical Society and of the Academy of Medicine, and etandg well in his profession. In accepting Dr. Day'g resignation yesterday, the Health Board passed resolutions which paid a high tribute to his integrity and ability." ___
