At 12:30 this noon Piot. B. E. Nichols met with an accident from which, the doctors claim, he cannot recover even f he is not now dead as this paper is being printed. He was sitting on a road cart in front of Dr. Sraith's residence, talking with the doctor, when his horae, a fractious colt, became nervous and began dancing around. Prof. Nichols swutig ofif the seat and went behind the cart, stïll clinging to the reins. The horse ran and Prof. Nichols hung on to the lines, bsiug his footing in front of Dr. Herdman's and was dragged by the now runaway colt. The colt turned the corner by the Presbyterian church and Prof. Nichols' head was dashed against the curb-stone, fracturing his skull. He was picked up and carried to Dr. Ömith's residence, wherc he now lies between life and death. The fracture is just over the Mt iye, and is as large as a mau'a haud. Drs. Smith, Mortou and Herdinan are attending him and making every eflort to save his life but with small hopes of success. His wife and daughter were notified and brought to his side. Prof. Nichols is probably as well known around the state, as well a in Ann Arbo-, as any of our citizens. His long conDection with the schools of this city, his publishing business, and his prominence as a fruit grower and pomologist have B brought him into prominence.
