Common Council Proceedings
The regular monthly meeting of the commun counoil was held last Monday eveaiDg. All the members of the council were present except Ware and Spokes. No business of iraportance was transacted A few petitions and Communications were presented. The Board of Public Works re:ommended that A. J. Savtryer be granted permission to lay a waste pipe from the opera house to Allen's creek. A!d. Martin offered a resolution granting thia permission, which was carried. This action of the council disposes ot the matter in differecca between the county and Mr. Sawyer. There are six extra hghts to be placed soma place in the city and up to date there have been twenty petitions asking that lights be placed at different points. Two more were preented atthis meeting, one signed by A. P. Ferguson, Henry Cornwell and George Millsr, asking that a light be placed at the junction of Detroit and Divisionets., and another from Henry Wade Rogerc, L. D. Wines and 12 others, asking that a light be placed on the corner of State and Monroe-sts. The report of the finance committee shows that $1,974.79 had been expended d iring the month as follows: Contingent fund $330 22 Street fund _ 966 22 PĆ³lice fund 125 60 Poor fund 7o 24 Firemen'sfund 478 79 The ordinance relative to fiie and fire Hmits went to third reading and was then tibled. This ordinance provides that the Chief of the Fire Department shall inspect all chitnneys and flue, and that a building permit must be obtained, by first paying to the Chief of the Fire Dapartment one do lir on a thousand valuation, two on five thousand, and fifty cents for each additional thomand. Another ordinance was introduced by Aid. Allmendinger in reference to porters, runners and drivers, giving to the City Mnrchal power to determine where the vehides should stand; and where the drivers shall stand; and also tbat porters, etc, shall not anaoy passengers. The council then iustructed the Marshal to suppress the dens in the city and arrest offrnders. Tbe settlement of the cemetery matter that was looked for did not materializa, nothing being presented or offered looking toward the settlement of this matter, the couneil leaving the settlement of this matter until the special meeting to be held next Moaday evening.
