Tho controversy between Mr. J. W. Schuckers, who wrote the life of Salmón P. Chase, and Hay and Nicolay, the biographers of Lincoln, is a very unpleasant one. It recalls how, in December, 1862, there wre two factions in Lincoln's cabinet, which threatened to destroy the Republican party. The radical faction was headed by Chase, secretary of the treasury; the conservative faction by Seward, secretary of state. The feud became so bitter tkat at length both gentlemen tendered their resignations. Lincoln adjusted the difficulty by requesting both gentlemen to return to their places, which they did. Then Lincoln said: "Now I can ride; I liave got a pumpkin in each end of my bag." But Hay and Nicolay Bay that the mental attitude of Chase towards the president then and afterwards was one "which varied between active hostility and benevolent contempt." They quote some letters to prove their position. And now Mr. Schuckers, the biographer of Chase, writes a long article denying utterly the truth of tliis charge. He says Chase was loyal to Lincoln throughout. Further, he makes very grave charges against Hay and Nicokiy themselves. He prints the rest of the Chase letters from which they make extracts, going to pi ove that they garbled the letters in order to make the meaning lean their way. This ia the most serious matter of all. If Messrs. Ilay and Nicolay would do this, then are they reliable historians?
